After resolving the wide spread WIFI issue we have heard from a couple of Macbook Pro and Macbook Air users who are telling us that the OS X Mountain Lion upgrade has had a dramatic effect on the battery of the Macbook’s

Eric got in touch with us to let us know that he thought he was all set to go when he had fixed the WIFI issues on hit late 2011 15″ Macbook Pro but he was then faced with a massively accelerated battery drain since the upgrade. Within just an hour his Macbook Pro’s battery had lost around 30% from a 100% charge. The Macbook Pro was only running Google Chrome, the official Mail application and activity monitor which showed that the CPU was 96% idle and also the fan were not running. This means it could only be a bug / leak in OS X Mountain Lion its self.

There has also been a lot of people getting in touch about similar problems with Macbook Air’s

We are hearing of quite a few bugs / issues with in OS X Mountain Lion and we are expecting these to be fixed within the OS X 10.8.1 update coming soon

I can confirm this. I get max 2 hours of batterylife on my macbook with mountain lion.  two days ago , the same macbook without the update produced a solid 5-6 hours of workingtime on the battery.
Big fail from Apple. You’d think someone would have tested the new OS against the batterylife.

I have a mid 2010 15″ MBP and upgraded to ML on 26th. Strangely I noticed that the battery is draining out very fast. In an hour it dropped to 80% from 100% running only Safari (browsing ML features on apple.com) and Mail app from apple. Activity Monitor shows 97% idle CPU. Not sure which one is causing this. I shouldn’t have upgraded from Lion to ML. I believed in apple and it is upsetting me now.

I have a 2011 mid-cycle MBA with Mountain Lion installed and the battery decreases very fast. While posting this entry it drops from %91 to %88.

Battery draining fast with my MBA13 (summer 2012) too.. QUite disappointed at Apple. Hope they would release an update soon to address this issue. However, surprisingly, I didn’t see many users experiencing this problem. weird

Yep, my MacBook is only good for a few minutes now – pretty frustrating! The battery drains, the fan is always on, and it’s VERY hot. I want my old OS X back….couldn’t they pinpoint any of this in testing?

I have MacBookPro8,1 13 inch and it went from 100% to 87% in less than 25 minutes.  It is running nothing but Messages, Mail Twitter and Safari.  I have only been using Safari so far.  No downloading of anything.  Weird.

I confirm: drain & overheating on macbook air 13”

  • Mboogaard

I have the with my MBA13 form summer 2012. After 10 minutes my battery percentage is about 83%…. I also have another problem what came back, and that is the fan speed.

Just when I bought my MBA13 my fan behaved strange, it was always on. After an MSC update is was gone. But with the update to Mountain Lion, it’s back…. I’m still looking if it came with the SMC update to enable Powernap. But Im not sure. Anyone else this fan problem?

  • Saleem

I have MBP 13 and after installing new OS, I’m getting max 2 hours of battery life. Even battery is fully charged and MBP is sleeping battery keep draining. roughly 20% overnight.

battery drain and also overheating on macbook pro 13inch mid 2011

  • Cosmin Constantinescu

I can confirm too, same issue on 2011 Mac Air. Fully charged on Friday, opened it up to answer a few emails on Sunday and it was at 40%? Why? i even disabled Power Nap, even on adapter. So while researching this i got it down to 26 already, 10 mins of work :((
I am frustrated as hell, that i did not backup my previous OSX. Damn me trigger happy intealling

MBP 13 Late 2011. Lion gave me at least 5-6 hours battery life. Mountain Lion is giving me maximum 3 hours. Hopefully Apple releases an update for this!

Mid 2010 MBP runs 2-3 hours with Vertex 2 ssd drive on board. Lion took already maybe an hour away. If it’s always this way I’ll stop updating. I bought this one because of its great battery life.

But my machine does not run hot. And because everything else is working so smoothly this is hopefully something can be fixed in update. Maybe I’ll try SMC reset next. It solved some probles when Lion came out.

  • Mika Bressel

I confirm this too. I usualy work 6 to 6,5 hours with my MBA (13 inch, mid 2011). With OSX 10.8 I can get barely 3 hours. It drains 1% every two minutes.

  • Ben

I have one of the retinas and have this issue, too.  A bummer after shelling out so much cash for a machine that was supposed to give me 7 hours and now I get half that if I am lucky.  Is Apple going to address this you think?

  • Citrinna

the same problem with MacBook Air :( before upgrade it was 10 hours, now just 1,5 :( and the fan is always working…

  • Lkisrael

Yup, here too.  Fan running, and drains in an hour when I used to get 4 or 5.  Oh, and the battery shows 98% charged, and I’m plugged in!!

  • lee730

Same here, I was a bit shocked to find my macbook air (summer 2012, 13″) to be warm while it was sleeping in my bag just now. How can it heat up while sleeping?! And the battery has drained up to ~50% while sleeping (it was fully charged at work, I unplugged and immediately put it into the bag when I was off from work). Terrible!

  • Relatoriodiretoria

I can confirm this too!! 1 1/2 hours of battery charge. Before the upgrade, it was more than 5 hours. I’m seriously considering go back to Lion or Snow Leopard :-/
Apple must release a fix as soon as possible.

  • Walter Cruz

While posting this entry it drops from 95% to 92% … 3 percents in 2 MINUTES!!!! WTF?!?!?!?!

  • osvaldouribe

same here… my fan don’t stop running.. even, I made a SMC and PRAM reset.

  • Mocnarf1

I thought I was crazy but you guys have confirmed what I feared… OSX 10.8 is draining my battery like crazy. It also now says my battery should be replaced soon. I have a 2008 MacBook Pro 15″ and in the last 10 minutes it has gone from 100% – 90.  It will only last about an hour or two now. Before loading 10.8 I was getting at least 3 – 5 hours depending on what I was doing.

  • Johnny Cash

    LOL. Mines fine;D Losers!

  • Bob Life

hey guys, i have found that google chrome (and other apps) on mountain lion tends to use your GPU (Nvidia Gt650M for retina display) rather than using your integrated graphics, therefore you need to download gfxcardstatus by cody krieger, this allows you to choose which graphics card needed, without this i got 4hrs battery and my laptop was very hot, now it’s cool and gets 6 hrs with wifi browsing and downloading simultaneously

  • Lindaywang

Any one having constant fan running after installing Mountain Lion?  I checked my CPU and there is nothing running that would trigger the constant fan running, and it’s also draining my battery.   Anyone can help would be great…

  • Qr8

i have the seem battery & overheating
    when they’ll fix it !!

  • Guest

I just completed a Lion upgrade about 2 hours ago.  In the middle of the upgrade and the battery dropped by about 50% and now the fan is on almost constantly.

There have been several updates (MacBook pro late 2011) and my fan runs often and battery drains quickly and when not in use.  Any ideas when this is going to be fixed?
